Cultural Spaces for Future Urbanites
17:30 - 18:00
La Centrale, Nuvola Lavazza
A project that speaks of freedom, openness, diversity, and collaboration, transforming a former grey complex into an urban campus.
Nová Cvernovka is Slovakia’s largest cultural and creative centre, transforming a former chemical school complex in Bratislava into a vibrant urban campus.
Operated by the Cvernovka Foundation since 2017, the site now houses 132 art studios, multifunctional event spaces, a public library, community garden, terrace, playground, and café/bar venues like Giraffe Bakery and Skrytý bar.
The campus hosts a diverse programme —music, visual arts, theatre, literature, film, lectures, workshops and festivals— welcoming both local creatives and the public . Retail spaces on the ground floor support slow-fashion designers, artists, and makers, reinforcing the centre’s mission to foster local culture and economy.
Driven by values like freedom, openness, diversity, collaboration, ecological sustainability, and civic engagement, Nová Cvernovka serves as a laboratory for community-led regeneration, hosting environmental workshops, social innovation events, and multicultural dialogues.
Nová Cvernovka stands as a scalable model of how abandoned public infrastructure can be repurposed into accessible, creative, and socially sustainable urban ecosystems.
Laco Oravec is the Head of Fundraising & Partnerships at the Nadácia Cvernovka, where he plays a pivotal role in community programming, strategic development, and stakeholder engagement for Nová Cvernovka. Formerly a program director at the Milan Šimečka Foundation and an active voice on civic and human rights issues, he brings a strong community-centered vision to the project .
