COME TO STUDY, CHOOSE TO STAY

In Italy, the student housing sector is experiencing strong growth. It represents a new frontier for urban regeneration fuelled by international capital, but it also raises questions about the opportunities and risks associated with a model that is still to be discovered.

In our country, the growing demand for beds from non-local and international students is countered by a shortage in supply: private market accommodation is limited, and this gap is fuelling the construction of new structures that combine hospitality, student housing, and other functions. Student residences are an effective tool for urban regeneration, but the need to maintain a balance between commercial development and fair access to housing raises some questions. In this working group, experts and public administrators will discuss the role of student residences in future urban regeneration strategies and how to ensure that the benefits generated are not accompanied by distorting effects on the social and economic fabric of cities.

Working group in Italian.
