Stories of Rising Water
Water is both a threat and a blessing. The films in this first-day program curated by AFFR expose the growing impact of flooding, leading to loss and displacement for communities, but also suggest practical ways of designing with rather than against rising water, within an increasingly uncertain climate.
Belle River – Guillaume Fournier, Samuel Matteau, Yannick Nolin, USA, 2022, 11’
2019. Spring flooding in Mississippi hits record highs. In Louisiana, the residents of Pierre-Part are preparing for the worst. Barring an unexpected turn of events, local authorities will soon be forced to open the floodgates of the Morganza Spillway in order to save the cities of New-Orleans and Bâton-Rouge from further uncontrolled flooding. Faith and resilience are the two best weapons they still have in the face of uncertainty.
Washed Away – Aucéane Roux, Canada, 2024, 16’ — Trailer
The Canadian government makes a radical decision: they will demolish the houses at high risk of flooding. Washed Away, by director Aucéane Roux, follows a family who loses their home after a destructive flood in 2019. All that remains are memories in the eerily empty streets. A sensitive film about the consequences of the climate crisis in Sainte-Marie, Quebec.
Aurora – The street that wanted to be a river – Radhi Meron, Brazil, 2022, 10’ — Trailer
Aurora is a sad and lonely street of a big city. On a rainy day, she remembers her trajectory and dreams about the future asking herself: is it possible for a street to die?
Building Visions – Diego Breit, Austria, Germany, Chile, 2022, 26’
City and nature are sometimes seen as each other’s opposites. In this documentary, design office De Urbanisten and experts from the Natural History Museum Rotterdam and Bureau Stadsnatuur offer another perspective: the city as a natural habitat for flora and fauna. Taking the examples of a number of projects completed by De Urbanisten – among them the Water Square, the Sponge Garden and urban nature at the Natural History Museum Rotterdam – they show how well the city and nature can work together. They offer valuable insights, strategies and concrete proposals for how a city like Rotterdam can embrace climate change.
