Large-scale inner-city redevelopment is about more than creating buildings. It is about shaping places that contribute to the city on an urban, cultural and social level. Taking the Utopian Hours Torino stage, Paul Philip Stavert, Partner at Powerhouse Company, explores how high-rise and mixed-use developments, including social housing, can strengthen the existing urban fabric and give something meaningful back to the city.
Founded by Nanne de Ru, Rotterdam-based Powerhouse Company works across a wide range of scales and typologies, from luxury residences to complex mixed-use developments and engineering achievements such as Floating Office Rotterdam and the Codrico Terrain masterplan. Drawing on the firm’s experience with complex inner-city projects, Stavert reflects on the architect’s role not simply as a designer of buildings, but as a collaborator bringing together different disciplines, interests and ambitions. For Powerhouse Company, the success of a landmark is measured not only by its architectural identity, but by its ability to establish a meaningful relationship with the surrounding public realm and contribute to the urban, cultural and social life of the city.
