How to Use a Rooftop

In dense cities, where land is scarce and expensive, new public space has to be found by looking up. Léon van Geest, Director of Rotterdam Rooftop Days (Rotterdamse Dakendagen), takes the Utopian Hours Torino stage to reveal the untapped potential of our cities’ “fifth facade”: the rooftop.

Under his leadership, the festival has grown into a political and design manifesto for contemporary urban planning. Projects like Walk The Block — a temporary aerial walkway connecting 12 rooftops via stairs and suspension bridges — prove that the space above our heads can host culture, gardens, biodiversity, water storage and public squares. Rotterdam shows how strategic rooftop use can make cities not just healthier, but more democratic.
