Kristian Koreman

Co-founder / ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles]

Kristian Koreman and Elma van Boxel are the founders of ZUS – Zones Urbaines Sensibles, a Rotterdam-based studio that has created new connections between architecture, economics, politics and public space. ZUS is best known for two projects, Luchtsingel and Schieblock, but in 2019 the publication of the book ‘City of Permanent Temporality: Incomplete & Unfinished’ opened the door to over 18 years of urban work and activism.

One of Koreman’s most important projects is the IJmuiden sea lock, the largest lock in the world. More recently, the two ZUS founders collaborated with MIT and Urbanisten on the Rebuild by Design project in the United States.

Van Boxel and Koreman were also curators of the 2012 Rotterdam International Architecture Biennale ‘Making City’ and were selected as Lab Members for the BMW Guggenheim Lab in New York. In 2007 they received the ‘Maaskant Prize for Young Architects’ and in 2012 they were awarded the ‘ Architects of the Year’ award.
