Berlin, the Largest Car-free Zone Ever?
Autos Verboten. Thousands of signatures to ban cars from the city and an official referendum on the cards ー a revolution that would reach far further than Berlin. It is the Berlin Autofrei campaign, told by one of its prime activists.
At Utopian Hours 2022, young Nina Noblé will tell the story of the campaign of Berlin Autofrei, an organization that is pushing for Berlin’s local government to pass a new law to institute a traffic freeze in the city. The goal? To incentivize bicycle use and reduce urban pollution.
Berlin Autofrei has managed to gather 50,000 signatures for its campaign, a success that has caused an uproar in Berlin and beyond, so much so that the local government is now faced with deciding whether or not to approve the proposal-which for the time being is stuck on the tables of the local Senate. Should criticism of a potential traffic ban lead to the rejection of the proposal, the organization will be able to move forward: all Berliners eligible to vote can in fact decide on certain issues and pass laws for Berlin through a referendum.
If the organization succeeds in gathering 150,000 signatures, can a new law change the way we conceive of our cities?
