Rethinking Urban Farming at Rotterdam’s Floating Farm

Rethinking Urban Farming at Rotterdam’s Floating Farm

Can cows float on water? Yes, at the Floating Farm in Rotterdam.
Since 2018, the city harbour has been home to a farm where dairy products and vegetables are produced: straight to the consumer without passing through the countryside.
Entrepreneur Peter Van Wingerden’s idea stems from a reflection on the impact that the agri-food chain has on the environment and urban ecosystems. It is not only an ecological issue. The supply of cities is a central issue, especially in the era of climate change, where extreme phenomena and disasters can create serious difficulties in accessing food resources.
Local production is the key. Van Wingerden is confident of this: with him we will learn about the business model, development prospects and impacts on the city fabric of the first urban water farm.
