The ever-changing Holzmarkt
Along the Spree an “urban village” enhances the culture of temporary uses. An independent project to offer an alternative to top-down development plans that have long sought to privatize areas near Berlin’s main river.
Juval Dieziger is the co-founder of Holzmarkt, a multifunctional urban space in the heart of the German capital that covers an area of more than 12,000 m². An original public space that hosts cultural events, restaurants and bars, small craft businesses, a kindergarten, a music school and areas that are always open to the community.
The idea for Holzmarkt stems from a desire to oppose the Mediaspree, the public-private partnership that has been trying since the 1990s to create the new Entertainment District: a privatized district totally managed by media and communications companies.
Thanks to the effort made by Holzmarkt’s founders and to the support of many citizens, today, this is one of the most original and vibrant places in Berlin. At Utopian Hours Juval Dieziger —Chief Emotional Officer— will tell us about the birth and evolutions of this incredible project of urban transformation.
